This year Helford have 53 rowers going to Scillies to compete in our three racing gigs, Helford, Pedn Billy and Merthen. With four full men’s crews planning to compete, Helford are hoping to borrow a gig from another club for the weekend.
Behind the scenes there has been a great deal of extensive maintenance going on with Pedn Billy having a face-lift this winter with the inside stripped down and re-varnished. Merthen has had its hull repainted so all three gigs are in top racing order for the club. The racing oars have been checked over and re-varnished and painted and a new set of ladies’ oars purchased which should be delivered by the end of February.
The Friday night’s Vets (over 40), Supervets (over 50) and new Vintage (over 60) races will see Helford competing in each category in both the men’s and women’s races. The Ladies Svets will be looking to hold onto the trophy they won last year.
The selectors have the difficult job of picking the various crews for the weekend rowing and this year we have a high number of Scilly virgins racing on the islands for the first time.
Training will soon ramp up and once the crews have been selected the river will be a hive of activity as the world championships approach with the club benefiting enormously from having the two plastic gigs, Ferryboat and August Rock, to train in.
Our gigs will be shipped out to the islands from early March onwards.
Good luck to all crews this year. Go and enjoy the experience!
