Everything you need to know
We understand that jargon and unknowns may be leaving you with some big questions. Let us answer some of the questions we see most - and don't forget that your first three rows are free.
How do I try gig rowing?
Absolutely, we give you the opportunity to try us as a club, and rowing as a sport by providing all new interested recruits with 3 free rows. We offer a regular 6-week long training plan for new rowers, following which you will be integrated into existing crews or helped to create new crews. If you are new to rowing or the club, please email: newrowers@hrgc.co.uk to find out how to get involved.
Are there any age requirements?
We have several teams, age classifications, and ability-based groups. Our youngest rowing member is 11, and our oldest is over 70! We recommend Juniors be in yr7 or above as they need to be tall enough to sit comfortably in the gig, strong enough to handle an oar, and mature enough to work on technical ability.
Do I have to be competitive to row?
Not at all. We have many crews that only row to enjoy the beautiful Helford river and social aspects of rowing with friends. We pride ourselves on being a welcoming, friendly and inclusive club.
What are the rowing catagories?
Juniors: Under 16 years old
Open: All rowers of any age
Vets: Over 40 years old
Supervets: Over 50 years old
Masters: Over 60 years old
How do I join Helford River Gig Club?
If you would like to join from a different club email membership@hrgc.co.uk to find out more. If you have not rowed before and would like to give it a go contact newrowers@hrgc.co.uk or juniors@hrgc.co.uk (for under 16s) to find out how to get involved.
